Backpain, Food and Water

How about diet and water intake

“How important is it to really keep away from alcohol
and coffee, and to drink plenty water instead?”

…asks from Paul, 52 years old, North California.

Eric from BulletProof Back replies..

Well, a good diet and adequate water intake create the
foundation for overall vibrant health.

And good health is where a healthy body that is free
of pain, including back pain, begins.

So eating well is extremely important for many reasons:

* Inadequate water intake can cause dehydrated
lumbar discs, which lowers their shock absorption
ability and increases stresses on the spine

ACTION: Make it a habit to drink at least 2 litres of
water per day (more if you exercise)

* A diet high in sugar, other refined carbs and
trans-fats causes inflammation in the body, which
can cause joint pain (in the spine and elsewhere)
and slow your body’s ability to heal

ACTION: Make sure with each meal, you have inflammation-
reducing foods like pretty much ANY vegetable

* Excessive alcohol intake is a diuretic which makes
you lose water, so the more coffee (or any caffeinated
beverage) you drink, the more water you need to
drink… As well, getting drunk can cause you to lose
your balance and fall, hurting your back, or if you’re
an angry drunk, get in a fight where some big guy
breaks your back for you… :)

ACTION: Drink water between alcoholic drinks if at
a big drinking event, and/or learn a martial art
(highly recommended)

… and many more.

Now I’m not a dietary saint.

I enjoy coffee in my French press, with fresh ground
beans from my antique grinder about 3 days/week.
[The smell of freshly ground beans is amazing - try
it if you haven't]

I’ll also have a few beers or glasses of wine a week.

I also allow myself to have a cheat day once a week
(usually Saturdays).

But the rest of the time, I eat extremely clean and do
my best to make sure the foods I eat contribute to a
long and healthy life.

Hopefully that answers your question.

Seems to me you knew the answer already, but you
were possibly hoping for the opposite. Sorry to
disappoint. ;)

That’s it for today’s newsletter folks, I’m off to bed.

Good night!

Lower Back Pain In 3rd Trimester

Is it normal to have lower back pain in your 3rd trimester?

I have been having some pretty bad pains in my lower right back that moves around into my stomach. It is really painful to walk, and almost impossible to sleep. I am almost 30 weeks pregnant. I know I need to call my midwife, but she is out of the office today. I was just wondering if this is normal and if so how can I lessen the pain? Thank you, the pain has been constant for the last 2 days.

Lower Backpain. 3 Stretches To Avoid!

3 Stretches For Lower Backpain You Should Avoid

I want to tell you about a guy I just met for a training consult.

3 stretches to avoid with lower backpain and reason why you get back painHe’d had back pain for YEARS, until he finally met up with my
old university professor, Dr. Stu McGill.

Dr. McGill spent an entire morning with him assessing his
movement patterns and physical abilities.

The prescription he gave him was pretty simple:

* Hip hinge
* Strengthen glutes
* Curl ups (no lumbar flexion)
* Side bridge & roll
* Bird dog

That’s pretty much it!

And by doing these things, he hasn’t had a backpain episode
since (early 2010).

Simple.

Now, we’re working together to go from pain-free to peak
performance as he wants to get back into martial arts.

It’s gonna be fun.

When I met with him, he described a few things that he was doing
that were exacerbating his pain.

These things included the following 3 stretches to AVOID at all
costs:

1. Avoid bringing the knees up to the chest

This stretch brings on flexion of the spine, meaning that it
rounds out the spine too much.

In most cases, if you suffer from lower back pain, your spine is
already rounded out too much and you don’t need to increase the
curvature anymore.

If you do this stretch when you have lower back pain, chances are
you will make it worse and align your spine in a worse position.

2. Any stretch that involves twisting motions of the lower back

When you have lower back pain, the cause of your pain could
likely be some instability in the structures and tissues of your
lower back.

If you force your back into positions by twisting your spine,
these structures may become even more instable and worsen your
injury. It is best not to do any forceful movements or push your
lower back into positions that are not comfortable.

Doing forceful movements to increase your movement will not
necessarily make your injury heal faster.

3. Avoid bending forward and touching the toes

This is a hamstring stretch, and can work to stretch these leg
muscles if you don’t have any back pain. However, this stretch
should not be used for by 95% of people with back pain (the
exception is those with spondylolisthesis).

Bending forward to touch the toes may feel good initially if you
have lower backpain, but again, this stretch brings on too much
flexion or rounded curvature of the spine.

This puts too much stress on the intervertebral discs back,
causing more pain and damage in the long run.

I hope you put the info in this article to use.
I want to be able to cure you of your back pain for good!

Excruciating back pain at 40 weeks and 1 day pregnant

I am 40 weeks and 1 day pregnant, and for the last 3 days I have been experiencing very severe back pain that is consistent.

I can not get up from any position without assistance. Also, the baby is on my sciatic nerve and that is causing my right leg to give out randomly. At my last doctors appointment, I wasn’t dilated or effaced at all, in fact my cervix had closed itself. Would they induce me for this sort of problem?

Dull, Lower Backache During First Week Of Pregnancy?

Has anyone else experienced a really annoying, dull, lower backache during the first week or so of pregnancy?

If so, what have you done to relieve it? I have a desk job, so unfortunately have to sit a lot. I’ve been taking Tylenol and bought a travel pillow to put behind my back, but those are no longer helping! Any other ideas??
