Advil And Lower Back Pain

How many advil should I take for lower back pain?

Im a 16 year old football player and I have a game tommorow. My back has been bothering me and I have been told from a trainer that it is a strain. I want to the maxim amount I could take between now and tomorow which would best give me pain relief for the game.

Well, it depends. According to the box….. you shouldn’t take more than 400mg (2 pills) at a time, and no more than 1200mg in a 24 hour period. Will taking more than that hurt you, cause you to overdose and die? No, not if you still take a "safe" amount.

When prescribed by a doctor, ibuprofen will come in either 600mg or 800mg tablets (3-4 otc advil/motrin) and they have you take that every 4-6 hours. Also, the maximum daily dose under medical care is listed at 3200mg in 600-800mg doses. Now, while I realize you don’t have a prescription, but, if 2 advil every 4-6 hours isnt helping your pain, 3-4 would be alright to take, just, as with any type of medication, don’t make a habit of it.

Follow the instructions on the bottle, or call your doctor. Don’t risk overdosing yourself – use only the recommended amount of advil and rely on ice packs for additional relief. Taking extra advil won’t make you feel better – it will only damage your liver and ruin your game.

After the game you may want to make an appointment with a doctor or chiropractor, or a massage therapist who specializes in sports injuries. You may have a more serious injury that needs medical intervention – don’t risk your whole sports career because you think it’s not "manly" to talk about your pain.

You really shouldn’t take more than two every 4-6 hours.

Advil is also called Ibuprofen. You should never take more than six 200mg tablets in a 24 hour period. You can start with two 200mg tablets (must be taken with food, or milk, never on an empty stomach), then continue with 1 tablet every 4 to 6 hours, not taking more than 6 (or 1200mg) within the 24 hour period. Seriously, more is not better because of the side-effects. Also try a topical cream such as Deep Heat, massage, hot water bottle. These help increase the blood flow to the muscles. Also, good warm up and stretching before the game. If it’s a bad strain, and you don’t want to worsen it, you should really just sit it out, otherwise you might strain further and that could put you out of action for a longer time. Oh, and don’t take Advil if you have any bleeding problems or stomach ulcers, and you should not smoke.

depending on your height and weight, 2-3 should be more than enough :)
