It is totally normal to have backache during pregnany and only expected when full term, with reference to the comment below from philliphorrackus i think this comment is extremely out of order, back ache is perfectly normal when due a baby!

You should definitely see a doctor, since this can mean that the baby is in a pre-perceptive state of labor, and can warrant a miscarraige in the future. It could already be too late, and the baby could very well be at the point of no return in turns of being saved.

I’m sorry for your loss.

Regular labor can sometimes start with a back ache. If you are 40 weeks, I would say the odds are pretty good its just early labor coming on, and I wouldn't worry about it being back labor until later on. Think back to when you had your period and if you had abdominal cramps and back aches you will be prone to having back cramps during labor whether or not baby is front or back facing. Congrats! You will have a baby soon!

Yeh all my friends had a really painfull back the day before labour.Instead of normal backache you cant get comfortable with it and theres nothing you can do to stop the pain.Thats how you know its the early stage of labour.my friends got this with normal labours but it can also be a sign of back labour but it doesnt mean you will deffinatly have back labour.

At 40 weeks, I think it's totally normal to have a backache. However, at 40 weeks, I would IMMEDIATELY call you doctor just to ask. It wouldn't hurt. In the meantime, here's a great pregnancy resource while you wait... ;-)
