What is the best sleeping position when you have lower back pain?
Question..lower back pain when lying in bed
Hello, there. You know how sometimes all the pain from the day collects when you tuck in bed ready to sleep. Sometimes, I have lower back pain as I lay in bed. What is the best position to sleep? Should i sleep on my back with my back straight? Should I sleep on my side? Or should I sleep on the tummy?
Thanks a lot!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your doctor has pronounced judgement that he/she knows what’s causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of treatment: it’s easy and cheap.

It depends on the reason for the pain. I broke my back several years ago and for me I hurt less if I lay on my back with my knees flexed and my feet flat on the bed. I hope this helps. I know how much you can suffer from this.
I've lived with lower back problems for many years. My doctors recommend sleeping on my side with a pillow between my knees. They say to never sleep on my stomach and if I sleep on my back, I can hardly move in the morning so that doesn't work.
The quality of the mattress is super important. (I like my tempurpedic as it really helped my leg and back problems) The old advice about a super hard mattress is actually wrong.
You need support under the lumbar arch. Try a little rolled towel right in the small of the back to support the lower back when you sleep on your back.
Sleeping on the tummy often makes low back pain worse.
If you sleep on your side, be sure to put a pillow between your knees so your spine is straight and not sagging or twisted.
When that happens to me I get up and take a couple of aspirins..Go back to bed and lay on my tummy…It also feels pretty good to lay on my back and pull my knees into my chest so my lower back is touching the floor..But not too comfortable to sleep…lol…Might try your side with a pillow between your knees too…ss
sleep on your back with your knees raised with 1-2pillows, or on your side with your knees bent and raised slightly (kinda like the fetal position). you'll feel horrible if you sleep on your tummy.
Well, i have the same problem but it is because i have a protruding disk and a pinched nerve in my lower back. I find a few different positions helpful. one is while you are laying on your back, put some pillows under your knees to elevate your legs up a bit. second, i have a boyfriend so i use him, but you can use a big pillow or body pillow while laying on your side, almost on your stomach, and put one leg up over the pillow. Both of these positions work for me. Just remember, refrain from sleeping on your stomach all the way. It puts too much stress on your lower back. i hope either of these ideas work for you. Let me know.
