Can sciatica pain be in the top of my thighs?
Can sciatica pain be in the top of my thighs as well as the back?
I have sciatica problems. All my doctor is doing for it right now is muscle relaxers and we’re going to start some physical therapy soon.
I have new pain in the top part of my thighs. I’m used to my butt and legs hurting, but not this part of my thighs. Can that be a result from the sciatica?
It’s worse in one leg than the other.

I’m assuming you mean on the FRONT of the thighs. Although technically not sciatica because it’s not the sciatic nerve, the femoral nerve can give this presentation. It can occur in much the same manner as sciatica, but it’s just a different nerve.
If you mean the back of the thighs, yes this can occur anywhere along the course of the sciatic nerve. If your legs are feeling better, but now it’s just the top of the thigh that hurts, this is a sign of improvement. The closer the pain moves towards the spine, the better the indicator of a good recovery. This is called the centralization phenomenon and is a well documented predictor of good outcomes.
The muscle relaxers will not help…go to PT if it does not resolve on it’s own.
You do not necessarily need any diagnostic imaging at this time. A good physical exam is just as valuable as an MRI unless you have had a history of cancer, are under the age of 18, over the age of 65, have had a recent trauma, cannot urniate, or are demonstrating significant neuological deficits.
The Sciatic nerve runs from just below the waist (at the spine of course) out across the buttocks, over and in front of the thigh just above knee level (but still deep within the leg) and down to the big toe. It also has branches coming off from it and so any pain within the leg could technically be caused by pressure from the site of the sciatic nerve in the spine.
yes it can, new radiculopathy means more injury;; you need to get the SCIATICA diagnosed, could be quite a few causes;; usually need an xray & at least an MRI;; in the meantime, please get a gel cold pac & use it on your low back;; sciatica is the RESULT of the nerves in your low back being injured in some way, by swelling, bone positioning, hernitaions or bulging of discs, etc;; if there is any swelling, the cold pac will help decrease some of this & you will experience a diminishing of leg symptoms, but you may feel more pain @ your low back (this increase in LB pain WHEN there is a decrease in radiculopathy is actually ok);; but you need to find out what’s going on in your back & you need to figure out or learn from your therapist how to take care of your back;; evidentally you’re reinjuring it!! good luck!!
No – but a misaligned pelvis causes both this and sciatica.
This is exactly the location where muscles insert. If your pelvis has rotated, it will cause these muscles to get stretched. After a while they will start to hurt because of this stretch. In addition, when the pelvis is misaligned, it provides pressure on the sciatic nerve and can cause sciatica. Usually you will notice the sciatica first, because it is more sensitive and nerves tend to react quicker to stimulus.
So what do you do.
Go and see a chiropractor. They specialize in realigning your pelvis. First, they will be able to give you a diagnosis (beyond sciatica). Then they should be able to realign your pelvis which should take the pressure off the sciatic nerve and also provide some relief at the top of your thighs.
I hope this information helped.
I wish you the best

Sciatica is typically a diagnosis used for the S1 nerve. this pain runs down the butt to the back of the legs and even to the calf and feet. If you are having pain to your butt and front of thigh then this is not sciatica. if you are having both symptions at the same time then something else is going on. good luck
The Sciatic Nerve runs in the back of the thigh not the front, you may want to try these exercises as well which may offer you some relief.
