Sciatica is caused by rupturing, bulging, or herniation of the spinal discs located between L-3, L-4, and L-5. It is treated surgically by either a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon. It is treated non-surgically by a chiropractor, especially one using the spinal expansion tables that are now available to perform controlled traction/relaxation on the area of your lower back. I would suggest trying the chiropractor route first to see if you can get more comfortable. If that doesn’t turn out to be beneficial, then you should get referrals to several neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons in you area specializing in spinal decompression surgery.

Poor you, fancy not being able to concentrate!
Sciatica is a very painful condition, she should go to her doctors and ask for treatment and physio. I suffered for many years, I munched painkillers like they were smarties and I was even on morphine substitue for a while. It was the physio that finally controlled the pain enough for me to stop all the painkillers and get my life back. I wish her well, look after her and stop your whingeing!

Sciatica isn’t necessarily caused by a herniated disc. The sciatic nerve passes under a muscle in the buttocks called your piriformis. This can be mistaken for a herniated disc. Poor posture can cause sciatica too. Surgery really is a last resort and by no means the only cure. Depending on what is causing the sciatica is really the answer. You may just need gentle manipulation by an osteopath or to loosen up tight muscles. Pilates is good for correcting poor posture and core stability. Anything harsh manipulation is not the answer.
