Seriously, I had a ruptured disc. Messed with chiro, injections, then surgery really helped.

The nerve was pinched through all this, I still have some numbness down my leg and side of my foot but my back feels better, no more cramping of muscles in back and buttocks.

Stretching, muscle massage, ice, and chiropractic care is the best formula. Medications are usually anti-inflammatories.
For stretching try knee to chest stretch and the piriformis stretch.

Often muscle knots or tight areas are found in the low back; this is where nerves come together to form the sciatic nerve.

Ice should be used to the low back and or buttocks where the pain is.

Chiropractic treatments may include some of these therapies plus gentle manipulations of the spine and/or pelvis can relieve nerve pressure and inflammation.

First and foremost are you sure it is a sciatic nerve problem? Many people think this is the cause of their pain and might be overlooking something more serious. That is the idea of seeing a Doctor, to rule more serious things out, or in. If you have seen a Doctor then they would have started you on treatment or suggested some treatment.

    Massage is the best:

Sit comfortably on a bed, chair or on the floor, whichever is most comfortable for you.

Support your lower back with cushions or pillows.

Rub massage oil into your open palms.

Use your palms and your fingertips to lightly stroke the area from behind your knee to your hip. Use long, gliding strokes and keep stroking towards your heart. Keep massaging for 2 or 3 minutes.

Massage from the hip and down the back of the knee, following the course of the sciatic nerve. Do this for 2 or 3 minutes.
