Help With Chronic Back Pain and Spasms?

How do I remedy my chronic back pain and spasms?

I dont’ have health insurance so I can’t see a doctor for this without it costing more then I can afford. What are some remedies or ways for me to help the pain in my back without needing to see a doctor or chiropractor?

I suffered with severe back pain for over 10 years, before I could convince a doctor to order MRIs, which was my ticket to an appointment with a pain management specialist. I’m still in pain every day, but it’s more tolerable with narcotics.

Back pain can be caused by different things, and there’s no one certain remedy.

If your back hurts because you have inflammation of muscles, ice packs will reduce the inflammation (20 min on, 20 min off, repeat) along with OTV anti-inflammatories. Ibuprofen (generic) OTC caps are 200mg each. The Rx dosage of Motrin (ibuprofen) is 600mg or 800mg each tablet. When I was prescribed Motrin for back pain, I was told to take 1 or 2 (800mg) pills every 4 hours. So, if you buy a bottle of ibuprofen (generic) you can get a bottle of 200 for about $11 or $12, and you can take up to 1,600mg at a time (and it won’t kill you.) If your back pain is caused by inflammation, using ice packs and ibuprofen will help.

If your back pain is caused by arthritis (deep, burning pain, usually aggravated by doing something) anti-inflammatories are the only answer.

If your pain is caused by muscle spasms, there is no OTC medication that will help. During those 10 years, I drank a whole lot of beer (my alcohol of choice.) Alcohol relieves muscle spasms.

At Walmart, I found a huge heating pad that covers from my neck to my lumbar spine. I found that sleeping with it (even though packaging warns against it) made me wake up with less pain.

As far as heat vs. ice, it’s just a matter of what’s best for you.

If/when you ever do get to a pain management specialist, they will want you to describe for them the type of pain, where it hurts, and what helps it (at all.) So, it would be in your favor to start figuring out some of those answers, sooner rather than later.

Oh, a chiropractor was responsible for helping me walk again. But, during the process, he injured my hip, so now I can’t walk without hip pain and weakness (and with a cane since age 36.)

Try to get your hands on an inversion table. You lock your feet in, and gradually turn yourself upside down to let gravity stretch out your spine. If your pain is caused by pinched nerves, doing this will relieve that pain. Although, if you don’t go slow enough, you can injure yourself by ripping the muscles supporting the spine, rather than stretching them.

Yes there is a way to release those muscles and be pain free. I have had to use these methods myself after suffering for years of chiropractors and p.t. that didn’t do much to get rid of the pains. You need to release the muscles for there are some that are pinched and causing this pain. It seems like for some muscles they just keep the pain within them until they are released as well. so once they are released the pain should be gone. Here is how to release your back muscles:
    Back:
    (do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and find the muscles next to your spine and press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
