How can back pain radiate to your limbs?

Question..

I have a family member with Fibromyalgia, and she deals with severe back pain. This pain often spreads to her arms and sometimes causes her hand to curl up. Why is this so? How is it all linked?
I’m really curious to know, because knowledge can be a start to finding out ways to help it. Thanks!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your doctor has pronounced judgement that he/she knows what’s causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of treatment: it’s easy and cheap.

Is she being medically managed by an orthopedic specialist? If not, she needs to be medically evaluated as many potential causes exist, and a chiropractor is not qualified to diagnose some of them, much less treat them. The pain she is having is radiated along nerves that originate from nerve roots emerging directly from the spinal cord. Any irritation of the nerve roots, or the along the paths of the nerves may cause the pain. The curling of her hand is the result of damage to the nerves serving the muscles that flex the fingers.

Because the nerves that innervate her arms are connected to her spine. And if she’s having those issues, I will tell you it may be more than just FM. Has she considered seeing a chiropractor? Some of her pain may be alleviated from adjustments.

    Here’s a for you… hope that helps!
