How can I get rid of my back pain in the morning, and is it a sign of a bigger problem?

Question about back pain in the morning..

Recently I've been having nasty lower back pain every morning. This happened about a year ago, but only lasted a couple of weeks. I visited a doctor and he gave me a list of back exercizes to do… wich seemed to get rid of the pain.

Of course shortly there after I stopped doing the exercises.

The same pain came back about a month ago… only this time it's much worse, to the point of waking me up about 4 hours after I go to bed. I've been doing back exercises, but it seems to only be getting worse…

Typically at night it's gone, but as soon as I lay down to sleep… it comes back (during the course of the night).

I've tried orthodics for my shoes, and the pillow between the legs.. to no avail. The only other thing I could think of is getting a new matress to try to alleviate it. Any other suggestions?

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your doctor has pronounced judgement that he/she knows what’s causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of treatment: it’s easy and cheap.

You need to see a physical therapist.

Before you go to the expense of a new mattress, try different pillows.

Another thing you can do to relieve some of the pressure on the lower back is to try laying on the floor face down for 2 mins each hour. It really works!

    Good luck

See a chiropractor. Often they will give you a free checkup just to get your business. I got a free x-ray once!

Have you considered that your back pain might be caused by a combination of stress and lack of exercise? It is possible, though getting a new mattress is another test. If you could do some long walks at convenient times during the week, you might find they ease the stress and the pain simultaneously. It wouldn't hurt to try. (Often people aren't aware that stress can cause physical problems.)

You really need to find out what is causing your pain. Is it the bed? Is it the position you sleep in? Are you not sleeping well, and tensing up, maybe while dreaming? Are you constipated? Straining? In the morning use a heating pad on your back. When the pain subsides enough to where you can get out of bed, take a hot shower or bath. When your skin has returned to normal after the hot shower or bath, rub in some sports cream, or use a patch. Perhaps someone can rub the pressure points in your feet. Try to walk a bit to loosen up your muscles. Don't do anything extreme until you know the cause. Does your insurance cover a chiropractor? Sometimes it just takes a few sessions to realign something that is out of whack. Maybe keep a journal of your daily activities. Sometimes that can pinpoint your problem. Are you doing anything right before bed, maybe lifting your children, leaning over the bed to kiss them goodnight, leaning over the sink to see better in the mirror? Are you walking a dog that pulls right before bedtime? I mention these things as they've all caused pain in me or others. And the pain is not noticable right away, but hits with a vengeance hours later.

A new mattress may be what you need. You can also try sleeping on your back with pillows under your legs which put your legs in a position like you were sitting in a chair but lying down.

there are 2 types of lower back exercises that will help – stretching exercises and strengthening exercises. The stretching will temporarily relieve pain – but you also need to do the strengthening ones to keep the pain from recurring. once the muscles are strong enough the pain should stop. But yeah, a new mattress sounds like a good plan too

    Try yoga
strengthen your abs to help your back
go to a different doctor for a second opinion
