Today I was in school and started my period. I went to the "nurse" and got a tampon. I put it in and then went to class. I've never had back pain before today during my period (or any irregular back pain) at the end of my class I stood up and instantly had a back spasm that lasted me over an hour. I wasn't able to feel my right leg or straighten my back. My boyfriend had to come get me and basically carry me to the car and then to my bed. I asked him to take me to the bathroom so he did and I did my business.. Right when I was done I put one of my normal tampons in and I could stand up and walk again, the spasm had instantly stopped. My back still hurt from the spasm lasting over an hour but it was almost a 100% improvement. I think my body was responding negatively to that type of tampon, rejecting it.

Cramping comes from the muscles in your pelvic area and uterine wall. A tampon inserted in that area could cause aggravation to the muscles and cramping could be a result. Strongly recommend that if you do have cramping that you discontinue their use so long as you have pain. Pain is a warning that something is wrong and you would be wise to stop using them. It is possible that another type of tampon might work better, but I have to say that I had that exact problem and found no relief except to stop using them altogether. It's inconvenient but the relief I got was absolutely worth it.

Edit: Most women do not get cramps from using a tampon, but some women do. Do not listen to answers that say they don't get cramps using tampons because they are not you, you get cramps. Yes cramps may come with periods - not everyone gets them either. The specific answer to your question is NO, it is not normal to have cramps and lower back pain using a tampon. If you are having cramps you need to stop using tampons.

Maybe you angled it the wrong way? Take it out and put in a new one and see if that helps. I have never had back pain from a tampon.
