My 80 years old grandma suffers from chronic back ache – I want to buy her a massager?
Question about massagers for back ache..
I want to buy grandma something nice to show her that I am thinking about her. She suffers from back ache lately. She really suffers, and cannot stand up for more than a few minutes or even stay in bed. Every position hurts her.
I thought that maybe a massager would work or something else for her back. Any ideas to what I can give her?

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your doctor has pronounced judgement that he/she knows what’s causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of treatment: it’s easy and cheap.

Well, seeing you said she suffers from back ache "lately" and there has been no
"long term or continuing" problem with this….
which is was "chronic" actually means, a massager would be no problem.
However, a doctor’s visit, if she hasn’t already
gone to one, would be a good idea to make
sure it’s not something internal that might
be causing her back pain. It may just be
a muscle sprain which a massager would be just fine for as "Cookie" suggested and, as she
said not for long periods of time and under
supervision.
I don’t see how "Idiot" determined it was
"chronic" by your question.
However, a doctor’s visit would be wise.
Good luck, Sweetie.
Can you even read sweetness? CHRONIC back ache. Sheesh! Do not get her a massager.
I just read COOKIE’s answer. A massager is not a "grand" idea. That will probably make her pain WAY worse. You should be banned from YA for giving such uninformed advice.
COOKIE is way wrong on this. A massager is the worse thing in the world you can give somebody with chronic back pain. MASSAGERS ARE FOR MUSCLES! Your grandmother is probably dealing with spinal/joint fatigue. Talk to her doctor and see what he thinks…
THUMBS DOWN TO YOU COOKIE. BAD, BAD ADVICE!
THUMBS DOWN TO YOU TOO SWEETNESS. ARE YOU READING THE SAME QUESTION AS THE REST OF US? IT SAYS RIGHT THERE "GRANDMA SUFFERS FROM CHRONIC BACK ACHE." NOTE THE WORD "CHRONIC!"
at her age a massager will likely do more harm than good, and she probably won’t use it anyway.
I would buy her three or four trips to an accupuncture clinic.
Hi Ladybug…
That’s sounds like a sweet idea
for grandma.
My 82 year old Mom was having
problems a while ago.
A few things we checked on were…
her shoes. A lot of body aches and
pains start from the feet. Does she
need arches? Are her shoes worn
out on one side where it’s affecting
her spine and causing pain?
Does she need new shoes?
Is she always wearing slippers
with no arch support?
her chair. My Mom had this really
squooshy comfortable chair that
she would always sit it. But, it
was curving her spine. It was
also hard for her to get out of
once she sat down. So she
would sit in it for long periods
of time. My sister brought over
a firmer chair. A wing chair.
It’s easier for her to get out of
which helps her walk around
more for needed excercise.
It also keeps her spine straighter.
her bed. I know Grandma probably
loves her nice cuddly bed.
But, how old is it?
Is it soft and squooshy to
where it curves her spine when
she sleeps? Does she need
a new firmer mattress?
I think it’s absolutely fabulous
that you want to help Grandma.
Most kids forget about them…
until they need something.
You sound adorable like my
daughter. She just loves her
grandparents and goes over
once a week to clean and
help them.
We changed all the above for
my Mom, and she still has
her aches and pains, but she
has not been complaining
as much about her back as
she was.
If it’s impossible to help with
the above items because of
the money, maybe other family
members can pitch in and help
purchase them. The chair
we got her was used by my sister
…but it was in good condition and
worked.
Otherwise…the massager is a
grand idea seeing it’s
not "chronic" back pain and
it just started lately as you said.
She probably won’t
use it much so, maybe on days
when you visit, you can set it up
for her and let her sit on it for
20-30 minutes. She shouldn’t
sit on it constantly.
Also, does she have a walker?
"Falling down" injuries are the
number one cause of hospitalization
of seniors. Maybe a walker would
be nice. To help her get in and out
of bed so she won’t fall. She may
say she doesn’t need one…it’s
a pride thing, but maybe if you
just brought one over, she would
end up using it. I believe her
insurance would cover that if
her doctor writes a prescription for
it.
Good Luck, God Bless and
thanks for loving your
Grandma!!
