Back ache for nearly 6 months

Question about long-term back ache..

I am having back ache from more than six months.I have been to the ortho.doc. Did all tests,viz..mri,xray,urine,blood tests everything is normal. Doc says nothing is wrong with me as the tests are normal, but I still have back pain and I dont know what to do.

Physiotheraphy gave me temporary relief.Scared to do exercises. Any good suggestions will be worth my life.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your doctor has pronounced judgement that he/she knows what’s causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of treatment: it’s easy and cheap.

    Hi,
The symptoms which you have described suggest that you have almost continuous pain in the back of your neck, thorax and lumbar region. The pain only responds partially and transiently to analgesics, local analgesic creams and TENS. All these are just symptomatic treatments aimed at relieving your symptoms. They have their value in short term and when the cause of the problem remains unclear. But it appears that you have not been investigated to find out the cause of the pain.

Since you are a young man, you are unlikely to be suffernig from any degenerative disease of the spine to account for the pain. More likely, it might be due to some inflammation occurring in and around the structures of your spine (like bone, tendons or cartilages). You have to pay more attention to your pain. Does it occur/ increase on bending, sneezing, coughing? Does it radiate up or down? Is there any morning stiffness? Does it take at least half an hour in the morning to make your back mobile again? Do you have any other joint pains/ rash in the body? Do you have any fever? Does the pain increase in the night? Do your hands/ fingers blanch or become blue while you dip them in cold water?

If answer to any of these questions is YES, then you must consult a Rheumatologist/orthopaedician/ Neurologist. After clinical examination, you will probably need few blood tests and imaging.

sit in a chair and make sure its stable then lean back and keep pushing on a wall or something to get you back to crack….might help.

Don’t rule anything out. I had an aching back for years. I thought it was because of multiple car accidents. They had caused some minor damage but the main cause for the pain turned out to be an ulcer. I never felt it in my stomach and didn’t know until I was vomiting blood. Now that that’s being treated, I’m in much less pain.

If you are at all overweight, try your best to lose some. Try exercises but don’t push too hard at first. Gentle movement will do more for you in the beginning. You just want to loosen up a bit so your body can heal itself. Depending on the type of pain and the cause, sex can be an excellent therapy.

Psychological factors can also exacerbate pain. It doesn’t mean that the pain is all in your mind. it’s just that you interpret pain with the brain’s chemicals so if they are off, you’ll feel more pain. Try getting out and doing things and enjoy whatever sunlight you have. Play music that you enjoy and will either relax you or get you pumped, whichever feels better. Spending time with children can ease pain greatly.

go to your chiropractor, let him/her make a determination. They will give you an alignment (it will take 24 hours or resting for any pain to relieve itself. Take Advil after food. If that doesn’t cure the pain go to a doctor (not an ortho) and ask them to refer you for an x-ray for where it hurts.

Go to an internist and see what he says. If physical therapy helped, keep it up. Physical therapy should include cardio for muscle that affect back. Swimming is best, but walking is good. Strengthen your abdominals and quadriceps also stretch your hamstrings. Use ice massage on your lower back to relieve inflammation. Learn how to sit, stand, lift and work from your PT. Get a massage specializing on your lower back once a week. Try Shiatsu massage.

    are you sleeping correctly?

what has changed in the last 6 months? new shoes? new desk at work? new chair? new work? do you drive more or less?

many things can cause backache, if all the checks reveal nothing it might be muscular, try some Deep Heat or other rub-in treatrment that may eleviate the pain.

    Drink more water
    Sit up straight
    walk tall – straighten back

Most probably the reasons are psychological Are you worried about something. Still stick to the physio and exercises. Ask you physiotherapist about the type of exercises that will do you good.
