What is a good bed to relieve back pain?

Question about beds and back pain relief..

I’ve been sick for the last few days so I’ve stayed in bed. I’ve found that lying in bed actually makes my back feel worse, and last night I felt like a shock went up to this area on my back. Every couple hours I kept waking up with back pain.

The area that hurts is slightly below the middle of my back, to the right. My bed has a lot of indentations in it, and no matter what position I tried my back still hurt.

While I was lying there in pain I turned on the tv and saw a commercial for the sleep number bed, which they claim has good back support and will help people with back pain. I also remember seeing commercials for temperpedic that claim the same thing.

The rest of my family uses Sterns and Fosters and like those beds. Are there any studies on which beds are good for people with back pain?

I don’t think there is one answer for everyone…people with different types of back problems need different types of beds (for instance, those with degenerative lumbar stenosis generally require a softer surface, with those with a disc herniation require a firmer surface). I suppose this is where the sleep number bed has an advantage.

I will tell you of one thing that you may wish to consider. I know they offer the 30 day in home trial…however, if you decide to return in, you do not get a refund…only a store credit…and what else do they have besides sleep number beds! Just be careful!

I slept on a tempurpedic once…it was the worst night of sleep of my life.

The temperpedic mattress is not the best for a bad back. I think the one you saw called the sleep number is an air mattress. If It is they are excellent for back pain. That would be the one I would recommend you try. A Sealy posture pedic mattress is also good.

As to studies on beds it seems that everybody has a different opinion. I don’t know if that will really help you.

Just buy a firm mattress for your bed.

I have been sleeping on a Select Comfort bed for several years. I have also suffered from lower back pain in the form of a herniated disc in my lower back ultimately resulting in surgery.

Both before and after the surgery I felt like the bed was critical in careing for my back and recovering from surgery. While a this bed can greatly improve your rest and back pain, it can not cure all ill’s, particualarly structural issues like I had. The key in my opinon is the adjustable air chambers. At times I was best served by a firm setting others a softer setting was more effective, the main point is with the Select Comfort you have the ability to adjust the setting as you NEED, something that is not offered in my other beds. I would highly recommend the bed, best purchase I have made.

I have had back problems for years. Had surgery five years ago. We bought a sleep number bed last year and that is the best investment we have ever made. When my back is bad, I adjust it to comfort. When I had a problem with my back a couple of months ago, the only place I could find any comfort was my sleep number bed. I would recommend it to anyone with back problems.

I LOVE my sleep number bed and it has helped my back pain tremendously! It allows you to set the level to your comfort…which fully allows your muscles to relax thus NO PAIN!

I have suffered on and off from lower back pain over the years — I am a long distance runner who recently went back to a desk job, started wearing heels, and screwed up my feet as well. I’ve found that feet, back, hips… they are all connected. I finally got rid of my old awful mattress and bought a Sleep Number, and couldn’t be happier. Best nights of sleep ever. Also, I had that same pain you are describing – lower back, to the right. I did a bunch of research and it sounded like it was a problem with the sacrum… yoga really helped as well! Good luck! ~jessica

Hello, my name is Chris and I am an Online Customer Service Rep for Select Comfort. I saw your post debating the benefits of several beds relating to back pain. I understand it’s often difficult to make a decision as important as this one without seeing evidence that supports the claims of a company. Our company has engaged in a series of clinical tests over the years to prove that our product can really do what we claim it does. Feel free to see this research for yourself at http://www.selectcomfort.com/eng/testimonials/sleepResearch.cfm?lefNavId=6.

I would also like to offer my reassurance in regard to our Trial Policy. The majority of our beds carry a 30 day Trial Period that allows for a full refund minus the shipping costs to your original payment method. There are occasionally beds we sell at a discount or on special that do not come with a Trial Period; this information is always available prior to the time of sale. If you have any concerns about this or any other matter, feel free to contact us at 1-888-248-0028 or email us at customerservice@selectcomfort.com. We would be happy to address your concerns. Thank you for considering the Sleep Number bed.

    Sleep well,
    Chris V
