Sciatica, what can I do to ease the pain?

What can I do to ease the pain from my Sciatica?

I’m in a lot of pain from sciatica, never had it before but the pain is excruciating. I can’t see the doctor til next Tuesday is there anything, apart from strong pain killers, that I can do to help this condition. I’m feeling very sorry for myself as I want to get out into the greenhouse and start planting this year’s seeds.

It is dreadful. Rest yourself. Hot baths might help or one of the Deep Heat type lotions but really, nothing eases the pain. I take St John’s Wort to help me cope with the depression sciatica gives me. Chronic pain is so debilitating. You have my deepest sympathy. I cannot take pain killers any more, years of use has wrecked my bowels.

Mainly rest, taking pressure off by lying down. While you are working in the greenhouse, it can help to elevate one foot on a stool or other object to take pressure off your spine.

i too suffer from sciatica,i damaged a nerve in my back when pregnant 4 years ago, at one stage i was absolutely crippled with pain went to see a specialist and was told that if you have really weak core muscles it can really increase the pain. he told me to start swimming and when the bad pain settled start excercising so i did and i’m not joking have never looked back i swim 4 times a week and do gentle stomach excercises in the gym and i have really strenghten my self up. Give the swimmin a go and see if it eases it.

Try lying on the floor and pull your knees to your chest. This helps my husband.

Lay on your back with both knees bent, then pull one knee towards your chest very gently five times, keeping the knees bent, then pull the other towards you, now try and gently pull both at the same time.
Once you have done that, put your arms out to the side, and slowly take both knees to one side and then the other, only go as far as is comfortable.
Stay on your back for about 4/5 minutes with your legs still bent and only get up slowly when you feel the pain has diminished enough for you to then walk about.

Your best bet: Visit Dr. Tom Kilpratt’s blog on sciatica(in resource box)

He suffered from bad sciatica after he turned 30 for 10 or 11 years, and found a way to get rid of it in 11 days — probably worth checking out if sciatica is taking over life right now.
