Steroid Injection In Back for Pain
Has anyone had a steroid injection in your back for pain?
I would like to know about steroid injections for back pain. Is the procedure painful and does it help. Seems like a shot in your disc would hurt.

I have had 2 back surgeries and have R A about every 6 to 8
weeks my doctor injects my back==ask your doctor to give
your shots in your hip–the pain is very low-I don’t think
I will ever allow a doctor to inject a steroid into my back
again–the shots in the hip are just as effective for me
It won’t hurt to ask your doctor
I have had 7 ESI (epidural steroid injection) in my back. It really doesn’t hurt at all. They don’t give you a shot in the disc, they shoot the steroid in the muscle in the area where you are having pain. You will feel some soreness for about 2 days but then most people get relief from the original pain.
A shot into a disc is called a Discogram. This procedure is done in preparation for back surgery and it is extremely painful.
I hope I cleared things up for you. I have been through all of this and am now getting ready to have back surgery but please keep in mind my case is unusual. Most people get relief from the steroid injection. Please feel free to message me if you need more information.
Good luck and God Bless!
Yes, I had two of them done people react differently to the shots. I noticed after the first one, my back pain was not as severe and after the second one the pain went away.
The shot is painful. It is usually about a 15-20 minute procedure, it is usually done in the hospital by an anasthesialogist.
YOu lie in a tight fetal position you cannot move during the entire time and you have to hold your breath (it’s easier than you think) Actually I was afraid to move and breathe know that I had a long needed going into my spine.
The doctor let me watch the xray screen while he did the injection. It eased my mind. The part that hurts the worse is when the medication starts to go in. Some people hardly feel it, I felt it a lot, (it could be because of the extent of the damage) It felt like my ribcage was being clamped open.
Afterwards, they wrap you in a warm blanket. It feels so good. I got the warm blanket treatment and the doctor gave me something to drink and to eat afterwards.
You can’t work or do anything strainuous for about 24 hours.
I didn’t feel good for a few days after mine, but again everyone reacts differently.
My dad has had several cortisone shots in the knees, back, and shoulder. He says they hurt only slightly (less if you can’t see the needle) because they use a very small bore needle (which may be super long but small none the less). They also spray numbed his areas first. The effects were okay but shortlived, less than 24 hours. It depends on the person how long it lasts.
Here’s a fantastic site my Dad recommends (LOL I’m on the phone with him anyhow…Why not?!) that is a great read…You should check it out and good luck!
i dont thik that you can have a injection for back pain only nee pain
i know someone that has them. he said they don’t hurt, but the needle is huge. they use anesthetic (sp?) before they put the big needle in. it helped him alot.
My brother has had these.
They do hurt, but they also do the trick to reduce swelling…which takes away pain.
Just ask yourself if the reduction of pain is worth a short-term increase.
