Treat Pinched/Compressed Nerve In Lower Back/Leg

How can I treat a pinched/compressed nerve in my lower back(sciatica)?

I have extreme sharp pain in my lower right back, and the pain shoots down my leg into my knee aswell.

What should I do? Are there any treatments or should I see a doctor or a physio?

first off bless your heart, sciatica is absolutely awful. I suffer with it on a regular basis, and I would not wish it upon my worse enemy.

First off, a trip to the doctor would be a wise idea. He will prescribe pain medication and muscle relaxers. If it is unbearable, you are unable to walk on your own, or are losing control of your urinary tract or bowels, go to the ER immediately…even calling an ambulance if needed so that they can get you out of the house. Extreme pain may raise your blood pressure to dangerous levels as well, so don’t wait until you are close to having a stroke before you seek medical attention.
Secondly, bed rest. You will probably need to have someone there to help take care of you and whatever housework/childcare that needs to be done.
Third, elevate below the knee and use a heating pad. This will help relieve some of the pressure on your back.

Usually it will take a few days for the worse to pass, but once it does, you will find that walking and stretching will help tremendously (I usually will get on the riding mower and mow the yard..the vibration does wonders)

If you have chronic issues like I do, after you consult a doctor and have a thorough exam, you may want to look into chiropractic care. I hear alot of people have great success with that. I have not personally tried it (distrust…but that’s not a phobia that I push on others)

I hope you are feeling better soon!!

See a pain specialist. I have the same thing with pain into my hip and down the right leg.
Epidural cortisone injections have helped me for 17 years now.
I also have thesame problem in my cervical spine and have been told in need a triple spinal fusion. Very costly with no guaranteed results and a long 6+ month recovery.

    Definitely consult your physician.

Firstly, you’ve self-diagnosed. You need to confirm exactly what the problem is.

Secondly, don’t take chances. See your doctor, who will refer you if necessary.

Rest and strech and it dosent hurt to get someone to massage it.

the short is — if pain down leg constant, bladder or bowel probs or hard to walk, due to gait unsteadiness – Go to hospital / GP – need a CT or MRI.

If getting better, only occasional pain see physio

Lying on stomach, flat or a slight extension can help. Do only if pain free. Do go into pain

    Get well

ok sounds like you have a disc problem .. disc slips or buldges and puts pressure on nerves and also peroformus muscle that runs through your butt cheek also can put pressure on you sciatic nerve…lay on your back flat raise the leg that hurts and cross it over your other leg grab your knee and pull it towards you and hold it thus stretchec butt cheek and reduces pressure on nerve if prob is in back lay on tummy do a push up but leave pelvic area on floor or bed after arms are extended shift side to side then relax and repeat but never raise pelvic area just from waist up.this will put disc back in place keep repeating as often as you can…aslo a warm towel or heating pad will help too relax muscles.. and by all means see a doctor……..

back pain may be due to stomach, as most of the problems or sickness start from here. the contraction of muscles that hold the intestine pull the nerves and restrict the flow of vital energy to the specific location in the back.

About 95% of all the pain is due to trapped air, either in the intestines or the muscles.

For instant relief : – this is a breathing method along with thought modification.
Sit straight with back bone aligned with neck and head, THIS means take all the weight on your spine or back bone.

Change your thoughts only to the way you breath.

Place your both hands on your lap. with the fore finger folded touching the mount below the thumb. wrap your thumb over the folded fore finger. relax your shoulders

now as you breathe don’t expand yourchest as usual but slightly expand your stomach ( this is called diaphram breathing with mudra finger position), as soon as your stomach is expanded to yor comfort start expanding your chest to let maximum air into the lungs.

hold in this position untill you are comfortable. and relax your stomach as much as you can. If you are doing it correctly there will be bowel movements and instant relief in the back as well as shoulders.

now expell this breath by first colapsing your chest and then contracting your stomach slightly.
the thought you must have now is that you are breathing out all your problems out in to the wast ocean.

For a less invasive approach, you can go to chiropractor. They might can help by giving an adjustment to relive pressure on a pinched nerve. But you could also go on to a Dr, especially one that is an orthopedic specialist. After an MRI, probably the first step in treatment will be physical therapy. If that doesn’t work then next will probably epidural cortisone injections. Those might work for awhile. But once the disk bulges out to a certain point, the last step will be surgery to take out damaged disk and replace it, with either a bone graph or other material and lots of pins and screws. Some people surgery helps and they get along fine, others surgery seems to make even worse. My dh went though all of this. He had surgery about 3 years ago and did well till about 2 months ago and is having the epidurals again. He had one back on Tues and his pain was pretty much relived by Thur. Like another poster said, if you start having trouble with not being able to use the restroom, go on to the er.

I used to think chiropractic was mostly a waste of time. Then I had a pinched nerve in my neck that made my arm hurt unbearably all the time & was out of work. Today, I’m back at work & pain free, from chiropractor treatments
