What causes sudden and severe low back pain?
Debilitating lower back pain that just cripples me
I’m in good shape and in my mid 30′s but over the past year I have, for no discernible reason, been hit (all of a sudden and on 2 different occasions) with debilitating lower back pain that just cripples me for days and then goes away.

You might have spinal vertabrae out of place, or you might have something else going on, like gallbladder disease – that often causes back problems – or even kidney stones which will hurt your mid- to lower back.
It could be a number of things from a poor disc in you back to other more servere problems. See the Doc.
Sounds like sciatica to me. I had that earlier this year, and it was excrutiating. I went to the ER for treatment, and came back ok.
Check with your doctor to see what it is. Good luck.
Besides muscle problems it could, possibly, be kidney stones. Plenty of water helps for the pain if it is kidney stones.
