What is the best mattress to use to prevent back ache?

Question about the best mattress to use to prevent back ache..

I have recently moved in with a friend and the mattress I’ve been sleeping on is foam. It was originally comfortable, but now after several weeks I have been waking up with lower back pain. This resolves quite quickly, but I don’t want it to get worse. I have also noticed that it is very indented where I have slept. This can’t be good when I change positions during the night can it? I am also a very restless sleeper. What do you suggest in regards to this or an appropriate mattress? I don’t want anyone trying to sell me any fancy mattresses as I can’t afford this, just want advice! Also, I am only in my late 20′s and a slightly overweight – but not obese. Thanks in advance!!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your doctor has pronounced judgement that he/she knows what’s causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of treatment: it’s easy and cheap.

I had a very sore back and made the mistake of buying a memory foam. Sleeping on foam is terrible. It indents too much and because it forms to your body, it is much hotter in the summer to sleep on. I ended up giving it away and bought a firm mattress. Sleeping on a brand new firm matress is not the most comfortable, so what I did was get an old sleeping bag and spread it out on top of the mattress and put a flat sheet over that. The sleeping bag provided cushion for my pressure points and I had firm support underneath for my back. You can of course buy a mattress with a build in "pad" on top, and that would probably be the best if you can afford it.

foam mattress is the worst option as it has no inner support for your spine..there are various new products on the market-look at a ma tress with supporting springs and also double layer-which prevents the ma tress from sinking in after a few years.they also don’t require turning over-the only bad thing is that they are very pricey-as it is new on the market

the best thing you can do is get a piece of board and put it under the mattress it works wonders you need to get a good piece of board and it needs to be just a bit smaller than the size of the mattress about an inch all round and put it under the mattress you will find such a diffrence the board needs to be about 1/4 inch or 1/2 an inch thick try it you wont be sorry i couldnt sleep with out my board under my mattress

Get a memory foam bed. Don’t go for the full foam version go for half sprung and half foam. Try dreambeds (if in the UK) they always have a sale on. They are fab – they mould to your body shape but definitely spring back into shape the minute you get off. I love my bed.

we bought a memory foam mattress, which was quite pricey but its the best thing we’ve ever bought,my boyfriend and i had back ache for years and we put it down to the mattress and how right we were, not a twinge since then,it moulds into all the nooks and crannies and it just seems to fold in round about you, would recommend them 100%

My husband suffers from horrible back pain. What has helped him alot is a memory foam matress. You don’t need to spend a fortune on a temperpedic brand one. We got a great deal on ours at Denver Mattress. One thing we do to make it even better is switch sides of the bed every month or so. The mattress can start to hold your shape after a while so we just swap sides to prevent this. Hope this helps!

If you find the answer, let me know. I wake up with terrible lower back and shoulder pain. I need something that would be better on my shoulder since I had surgery on it.

At first I bought an orthopaedic bed absolutely awful hard and did nothing for my back then I decided to get a bigger bed so as to have more room I found a super king pocket sprung bed this has been the best thing that ever happened to my back
I was advised to get a pocket sprung mattress and I listened good luck, there is nothing worse than back pain

hi im 33 and have slipped discs in my back and if anyone knows how painful it is will agree you would try anything for a nites sleep, people say firm mattress is best but i disagree, before running out to spend money on sumthing that might not work see your g.p it might not be the bed it might be the start of back trouble , early treatment can help and sumtimes stop the pain all together, hope you get well soon

Right. You can get those mattresses that cost an absolute fortune that moulds to your your body. Memory foam. Unless your’e rich, forget it. BUT you can buy a thinner version which sits on the mattress and costs around £125 and has to be the most luxuriously gorgeously most comfortable, softest, bestest bed i ever slept on in my life!!! Its like sleeping on a cloud. It feels like silk.

I suffer back pain myself, so I’ve done a bit of research…
The traditional wisdom was the best is a rigid-hard matrex, or even to sleep on the floor.
It seems the latest view is afirm but flexible matrex is best: something that adapts to your shape and maintains it through the night.
