Why do I keep getting backache?

Question about continuous backache..

It’s mostly the back of my neck and shoulders, when I turn my head to the sides it hurts, I think I sleep in bad sleeping positions in bed and I work as a cleaner, could these be contributing to my backache? I try not to slouch but I guess I do sometimes, what can I do to ease it?

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book if you suffer from any kind of chronic pain. Even if your doctor has pronounced judgement that he/she knows what’s causing things, try this book. As the author says, trigger point therapy should be the first course of treatment: it’s easy and cheap.

Neck, shoulder and back pain is usually a chronic condition, meaning everything you’ve been doing up to now, improperly, has now caught up to you. As a cleaner you need to learn and use proper lifting technique (bend your knees, straighten your back when lifting), proper positioning when cleaning, etc. While sleeping you need a comfortable mattress/pillow to keep your spine aligned. In life you need to correct your posture and exercise. You might have weak abdominal muscles and hamstrings (this is more for low back). See your doctor and ask for a physical/occupational therapy referral.

First of all RELAX !!! Do not let the stress of life follow you to bed. Leave work at work and home at home. Perhaps a Chiropratic adjustment is in order. Take a sleep aid for a couple of nights to force yourself to sleep hard. This will usually make you feel a lot better. If its stress, you need to speak with a counselor to deal with the issues at hand.

I had the same problem – it is almost certainly posture related. Try to be more posture aware and when at work, take a few moments every half hour to stretch and relax any tight muscles.

I had this for weeks and it turned out to be my pillow. Spent loads of money on expensive ones and found comfort in a cheapy one with a firmish core. May be worth a try?

It could very well be what your doing right now: sitting at the computer. We would need more information to know exactly the cause of your pain. You most likely streched your back muscles the wrong way and "damaged" a certain muscle. The back and neck takes a long time to heal, since it is used so often. It may bother you for a while but certain positions or things you do (i.e. around the house, at work, exercises) will hurt more than others. You will then know what you should not do and how to prevent the pain. This will give you back time to heal as well. Bad posture at the computer can also cause pain in the neck and upper back. Get plenty of rest and good luck!

A draught on your neck could do this, it’s not back ache as it seems to be effecting your neck and shoulders, in bed lie on your back with only one pillow or no pillow, keep out of draughts from windows, if it continues get expert advice from your doctor, no point in suffering.

Exercise, it could be weak muscles. I herniated a disk 8 yrs. ago. Nothing hurt as bad as this, in my experience, not even birth! As soon as I could walk upright again, I started to exercise (doctor’s advice). Slowly, I started to run. Now, I rarely have any back pain because I have strong muscles that stabilize, I sleep better, and I like how I look, a secondary perk!

I suffer with arthritis. When I’m stressed out I seem to have the type of pain in my neck and shoulders. Its tension, check with your G.P. you might not release that your uptight. Also try some Ibuprofen these will help. Try having some relaxing baths to unwind before bed. Do this for a week and see if it goes away. If not go and see your Doctor. He might give you some advice or acupuncture.
